UNLV Law Students & Justified Bitterness When Professor Goes Missing

.
Whether the UNLV law professor went missing, is ill, has taken an early vacation or is just profoundly lazy, is yet to be seen. What is known is that anyone who took the 1L Const. Law Class is pissed off, except for the few that in all liklihood knew they were getting a 'C'. That would have been me. Given that this is going on right here in our backyard, I thought I'd comment. First off, good job, once again to WWL, for breaking the story.

The discussion that is running around all over several local and national Blawgs is whether these students are just normal pretentious law students that are hypersensitive about grades or whether their concerns are justified.
See Wild Wild Law, Nancy Rapoport, Above The Law, & WSJ Blawg.

The fact of the matter is that overall firms are decreasing their hiring of law school grads and clerks, all over (e.g. Ballard Spahr, Thompson Hine, etc.). Thus, those of you that actually get jobs are likley there only because of your grades, unless you knew someone. So, to say that law students should stop their wining is really pretty silly. If you went to law school and wanted a job after graduation, you know that you were pretty stressed out about your grades. If in fact you were one of the few that had good grades and were going to get an 'A', it was/is a big deal.

While I, personally, think that law review & moot court are worthless ventures for law students and that they artificially create a vehicle for a perception of excellence that does not exist, I do recognize that admission to these groups, in reality, creates job opportunities for law students.

So, UNLV students, get pissed!! Personally I'd be happy with a 'P', but that was me. However, I like the angst. It is deserved. The apparent 'hiding' of the reason for the P/F grade should garner even more animosity & it is doing so. Besides, what else does a 1L that can't find a clerkship have to get excited about in the summer after their first year of law school? You just wrote the biggest check of your life, dedicated your entire life to the study of your future profession & bent your will to that of your "supposedly" dedicated professors. When you find out they don't respect you enough to grade your test giving it the value of your blood, sweat and tears, you will likely flip out. That's justified, even if the "flip out" is anonymous, Nancy.
