Here we go again. There is another Nevada politician on her way to prison, hopefully; this time for a case that has gone on for more that 3 years. On Friday, she plead guilty to three felony charges.
You see, back during the boom, she was the recipient of the well known "Las Vegas Bags of Cash". She now admits that she used her office for "personal gain" when she sold public records out of the Country Recorders Office and took the cash for her and her own, typical Vegas business. However, with the influx of more and more non-Vegas natives, this type of activity is really being scrutinized. I've heard it said that when you move to Vegas, you either successfully adapt to doing business the Vegas-way and build your business or you do business the way the rest of the country does it and you just drag along.
In a recent piece on Channel 8, District Attorney David Roger calls this activity "offensive" and he says "Fran Deane is pleading guilty to theft, misconduct of a public officer, and unlawful compensation of a public officer." He claims, "She will never, ever hold public office again." That is yet to be seen.
Deane was removed from office back in 2006 and is now facing a maximum of 18 years in prison. Hopefully the sentence will "send a strong message: if you are a public officer, you have to walk a straight line," as Rogers states.
It is doubtful, in our opinion, that a ton will change. In fact, while some changes are occurring throughout the legal & political community, the only REAL changes that seem to be occurring are that more people are taking deeper measures to cover their tracks. Oh Well!?!
