Some of you think we only report about Las Vegas & only about the corruption in the judiciary. While this is our primary focus, we could not ignore this recent story out of the Reno Gazette-Journal.
.
Yesterday, it was alleged at a hearing in District Court in Washoe County that the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is involved in organized crime (who'd of thunk), has committed fraud, has terminated its whistle blowers, has misappropriated public funds & resources to the extent they failed to prevent a rape/murder, and has abused its power (an evidently its sheep). The claimants argue that UNR should, thus, be investigated by a special grand jury.
The claims being made stem from several events that are alleged to form a pattern and practice of organized corruption including: a claim of retaliatory termination of the UNR Women's Soccer coach upon her report of NCAA violations and her allegations of sexual harassment; a claim of university police misconduct, abuse of power, report falsification and misuse of public funds; and a claim regarding animal research (sheep) that is allegedly creating a health hazard for citizens of the county while individual profiteering abounds in violation of public interest and law.
.
The Women's Soccer Coach, in spite of a multi-year contract renewal, was terminated just after she reported NCAA violations regarding the men's basketball team & sexual harassment allegations. The claim is that the whistle blower is not a favored comodity at UNR.
It's one thing to move around the coaching staff, but the University Police appear to not be enforcing the law and in some cases breaking it themselves. It is alleged that they don't enforce DUI's, that they are falsifying reports and that they only use police vehicles to pick up drunk co-workers (and run errands, like getting a Coke) while patroling around the University has been halted. Car patrol was evidently reinstate after a student in the area was raped and murdered. The police were trying to save gas money by patrolling on foot. Obviously the bars and the 7-11 were too far to walk.
Then, there are the animal research claims of violations that the federal government has looked into and issued some citations, or whatever they do. This includes allegations that sheep are being dumped near the Truckee River, that sheep cruelty is rampant (if such a thing exists) and that personal profiteering at the expense of the university (and the sheep) is ongoing. I wonder what they are doing to those poor sheep that would require 'dumping the bodies'. There is an allegation of human gene study, though I'm not sure what that has to do with sheep. We may have to do some Ancient Greek research to find out.
The judge on the case, Steinheimer, was not sold so easily on the 'UNR is a Mob' argument. With repeated questions to the accusers and informative commentary on the legal standard required to be met by the accusers, it is unclear whether Steinheimer will open an investigation or not. He did give a little inclination on where he was leaning when he commented that, “You must show me a reason why I should call citizens of Washoe County to investigate if the federal government has already investigated. That’s probably not going to happen.” “Difficulty for you is to convince me to have citizens of Washoe County to now investigate it again” he said, in reference to violations of animal resesearch of sheep, aka sheep violators. (RGJ)
Now, I don't know if there is any legitimacy to these claims or not. But, it seems to me that there was an awful lot of people at Court, all saying 'kind of' the same thing. That alone should warrant some investigation, no? By the way, since when did Nevada leave its investigations and law enforcement of local crime up to the federal government? Steinheimer, you can do better than that for the citizens of your county. Besides, all the claims are not federal administrative violations.
The point is obviously that the various organizations within UNR are working together in a criminal manner. Yea, I know these are federal claims, too . . . small detail.
I don't care that UNR is the hometown hero. This may not be organized crime, but the Judge does need to step up and investigate these claims. Why? Because if even one of the claims of lost jobs, fraud, false reports, rape/murder while resources are abused, profiteering, etc., is true, then Washoe deserves better?
