This is a MUST WATCH/LISTEN for anyone that is concerned about 'free speech', hate crimes legislation, political correctness or restrictions on expression. This is where we should all be united.Ezra & Mark are really modern day heroes. They completely understand 'free speech', the dangers and the benefits. I've previously discussed these cases HERE & HERE. Finally the Canadian government (via the Justice and Human Rights Committee) is taking a look into the laws that the CHRC (Canadian Human Rights Commission) uses to attack free speech in Canada on the grounds that some speech is 'hate speech'.
I submit that only in the most extreme condition should speech be restricted. That is covered by our criminal statutes. Canada has proven that laws governing 'hate speech' only restrict our ability to have legitimate discussions regarding hateful topics. However grotesque, free speech is a must in a a democratic society. I'm not talking about inciting violence or death threats, there the actions are regulated and criminalized in our laws. I'm talking about regulating the words themselves.
You may not believe this, but Canada is much more progressive than the U.S., thus they encounter a lot of things first (e.g. gay marriage, legalized marijuana, hate speech laws). However, that means they screw it up first, too. The 'hate speech' laws in place in Canada are almost mimic to the 'hate speech' laws that Bavaria government had enacted PRIOR to Hitler. There is an argument that it is the restriction laws that gave Hitler's hate speech its stage, where otherwise social reason and social intellect would have banished such.
