Monday's Motion Day: 10-12-09

Historically, Mondays used to be "motion day" in Las Vegas Courts. Since the RJC was built, this collegial culture has slowly disappeared and newer attorneys don't even know that it ever existed. In years gone by, though, Mondays were the days that we all went to Court before 9:00 am (civil hearing times), we would stand in line and talk, we would meet out front on the steps, we would enjoy a quick cup of coffee, we would engage in good conversation and promote a slap of gossip. This would continue into the Courtrooms where there was always a lot of chatter about the judges, attorneys, firms and staff. That is all gone. In that memory, here I'll give a weekly summary of all things Vegas legal . . some news . . . some gossip . . . some blog review . . . submissions suggested . . . just like the old days.

10-6-09: Above The Law interviews Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and discusses her opinions regarding judicial elections. She is against it.

10-6-09: Gregory A. Brower, former U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada, joins Snell & Wilmer, L.L.P.

10-7-09: When judges commit misconduct in Las Vegas, is there 'swift' justice? Apparently not. Las Vegas Municipal Judge George Assad committed judicial misconduct in 2003 by holding a woman against her will in a cell (for no good reason). Assad claims it was confusion between him and the marshal, sure it was. The problem: misconduct-2003; reprimand-2007; apology letter-2008. 6 years?. HERE is the apology letter, 'sincere' is not a word I would use to describe it. (LV Sun). Other judicial misconduct sees similar time delays. Why?

10-07-09: Attorney Edward (Randy) Miley was charged with 1 count of animal cruelty (the dog had to be 'put down'), 1 count of child abuse/neglect & 5 counts of battery domestic violence, for the incident reported last week. All this after Judge Miley (his wife) got a restraining order against Attorney Miley so that he can't enter the courthouse (the Judge's place of work). Come on, they have armed guards there. Did the court really need to go that far? (LV Sun). Here is my favorite video clip on this story on FOX5 (comparing the kids watching the 'wife beating' to them breathing second-hand smoke).

10-10-09: The Craig P. Kenny Law Offices held their yearly party over the weekend. (See HERE). We are looking to WWL to really find a lot of the dirt from this event (sloshed judges, who left with who, fist fights, etc.)...please do not let us down, WWL. This is out of my league. However, if I beat you to the punch, I'll let you know first.

10-12-09: Blawg Review is hosted by Popehat, today. It is obvious that the citizenry of San Francisco "may have been insane" or "they were moral and made sense" from the very beginning, as we are introduced to Joshua Norton I, Emperor of the United States of America and Protector of Mexico.
